Accra, Ghana. 27th May, 2016 – The Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), West Africa, has launched the 6th edition of the Ghana CSR Excellence Awards, the GHACEA. The launch was performed by the President of the Federation of Association of Ghanaian Exporters, Mr. Anthony Sikpa, supported by the UNDP’s National Coordinator for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Ms. Pearl Darko, the Association of Ghana Industries, AGI, Japan International Cooperation Agency, University of Applied Management, Germany (Ghana Campus), Plan International and other reputable organisations.

The official launch took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra. Since 2011, the GHACEA remains the most coveted social responsibility, greening and sustainability awards scheme in the West African subregion.

The Awards scheme is modelled after the European CSR Awards and entries are vetted by a multi-stakeholder jury drawn from academia, business associations, civil society organisations, regulatory agencies, international development partners and the media.

Speaking at the launch of the GHACEA, Ms. Pearl Darko, UNDP’s National Coordinator for SDG and Philanthropy emphasised the need for the private sector to get more involved and contribute strategically to helping develop the nation, beyond mere economic gains. She reiterated that the quest for development and achievement of the SDGs is a collective responsibility and the private sector needs to become more active in the process.

The Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Mr. Koji Makino in his speech said: ‘Japan is a long-term development partner to Ghana and JICA’s commitment to helping Ghana achieve shared prosperity and development is not limited to support given directly to government. We have many projects and initiatives aimed at helping private sector enhance its efficiency, effective and eliminate unnecessary waste through the National Kaizen Project and other interventions.’

The President of the Federation of Association of Ghanaian Exporters, Mr. Anthony Sikpa lauded the Awards initiative and concluded that it will spur the private sector to do more to help society become a better place, while endearing the hearts of their customers to them.

According to Mr. John Kojo Williams, Lead Project Manager for the Centre for CSR, West, Africa: ‘The GHACEA has injected a new paradigm into how businesses give back to society. Companies are now better informed about their roles in society and beginning to weave social responsibility and sustainability around their core business mandate. This is a departure from the erstwhile ad-hoc and one-off approach to CSR. The entries are official open from now till the 21st of July, 2016. The GHACEA Awards Dinner Night will take place in September after entries have been vetted and verified.’

Top categories for the GHACEA include: CSR Company of the Year, CSR Practitioner of the Year, CSR CEO of the Year, CSR Telecom of the Year, CSR Bank of the Year, CSR Non-Banking Financial Institution of the Year, CSR Insurance Company of the Year, CSR Manufacturing Company of the Year, CSR FMCG of the Year, CSR Agrobusiness of the Year, CSR Aviation Company of the Year, CSR Real Estate Company of the Year, CSR Engineering Firm of the Year, CSR Mining Company of the Year, CSR SME of the Year, CSR ICT Company of the Year, CSR Hospitality Organisation of the Year, CSR Service Organisation of the Year and the CSR Initiative/Campaign of the Year.
